Cimplifi Conversations | Featuring Brian Moretti
We know the importance of building a company and culture that empowers people to thrive. We offer an environment where you can make an impact and grow and be recognized for the value you deliver.
Welcome to our series, Cimplifi Conversations, where we recognize a team member honoring our company values – courageous, reliable, inventive, and adaptable. At Cimplifi, we believe in empowering our people and providing opportunities for professional and personal growth.
Recently, Marc Zamsky, chief executive officer of Cimplifi, had a conversation with Brian Moretti, who we recently welcomed back to his role at Cimplifi as senior corporate development consultant. Brian took a medical leave of absence and he graciously sat down with Marc to candidly share his story. We hope you are as inspired by Brian as we are.
Marc: Welcome back, Brian! It’s great to have you back at Cimplifi, but your health is most important. I’m proud to call you a teammate and friend and your experience is inspiring, and I appreciate you wanting to share your story. Tell me how this all got started?
Brian: Marc, you have no idea how grateful I am to be back. I have been watching from the sidelines and cheering the team on, but I am ready to get back to work! It’s been a journey and one I am happy to share if it helps others. In mid-2021 I began experiencing symptoms that were consistent with colon cancer. As the symptoms progressed and worsened, I underwent an emergency colonoscopy which did in fact detect cancer. Shortly following the cancer diagnosis, we immediately started consulting with both oncology and radiation doctors. It was agreed an aggressive chemotherapy and radiation regimen was needed to stop the spread and to kill the cancer. The treatments started in January 2022 and lasted for seven weeks. It was a grueling and daily regimen. Fast forward to today, I’m happy to report that I’m cancer free, and getting stronger by the day.
M: You have overcome so much the last 18 months. What are you most looking forward to this year?
B: First and foremost, I’m looking forward to some normalcy and good health. Being able to come back to the Cimplifi family is a great gift. You and the executive team have been incredibly caring and kind towards me and my family. I’m really looking forward to being normal again and that includes waking up every morning with a purpose, and the ability to work.
M: What did you miss the most while on leave?
B: Again — simply, feeling normal! The opportunity to wake up in the morning and start to again feel like a human being be capable of taking care of myself. I also missed the challenge and stimulation of working — having the interaction with my colleagues and clients was also very important to me and I missed that too.
M: Your absence was felt deeply. You have been with Cimplifi a long time, even starting with us as a client!
B: I’ve been with Cimplifi since July 2015 after having worked both in a law firm (Gibson Dunn & Crutcher) for 10 years, and in a corporate legal department (Textron) for 9 years. The growth in our company has been incredible! Not only are we creating great ideas, workflows, and offering the best in breed technologies and enhancements, Cimplifi has brought together some of the brightest and most experienced eDiscovery, review and CLM professionals and the depth of talent is amazing. Combined with the financial commitment and resources that our parent company, System One has provided, these are both tremendous drivers for our success.
M: Asking for a friend (😉), but how do you balance (or plan to balance) your career and work life with your new perspective?
B: Our executive team has really been amazing. They agreed that I’d start off on a part-time basis allowing me to continue my recovery, build up my energy and strength, and not let the job overwhelm me. This demonstrates how supportive you and the team has been, not to mention the kindness and open arms of all within the Cimplifi organization.
M: I believe having a supportive work family is critical to a successful culture and I’m proud we give you what you need to get back to work on your terms. I know you also have a great support system at home. What’s family life like for you?
B: I was born and raised outside of Providence, Rhode Island, in Cranston. I was the youngest of seven children in a large (and loud) Italian family. I’m blessed to have raised by an amazing woman, my mom. She raised us as a single parent too which was not easy. Our mom was loving, independent and strong, and not to mention — the best Italian cook in the neighborhood. For me personally it was great growing up in a large family, and especially having three older brothers and three older sisters to watch over me, to guide me and to support me. My mom passed approximately 10 years ago, but my siblings were there for me and my husband, Miller when I was in thick of cancer treatments, being shuttled to numerous hospitals and appointments.
M: What do you enjoy most about the service provider side and what would you be doing if you weren’t in this industry?
B: I love this industry and have been doing some form of legal support and eDiscovery technology for a long time and it has afforded me a stronger understanding (and I believe greater empathy) for our client’s pain points, needs, and expectations and a great understanding for what drives their businesses. I’ve always been in this space, and I don’t know anything else! But, if I could choose to do anything I’d love to own a farm or a house on Block Island, RI, and breed Labrador puppies. I love being outdoors and in nature and I find solace in planting both flowers and vegetables – watching them grow, which I do every spring and summer, and I can’t get enough of our two labs, Louie (yellow lab) and Miss Ellie Mae (black lab). I’d like to make it a trio and add a chocolate lab, but Miller says, “NO!”
M: What’s your advice to someone just starting out?
B: The advice I’d give anyone starting out has evolved because of my recent battle with cancer and that is to enjoy what you do, always look at it as opportunity to grow and embrace the challenge with open mind. Believe in the company or firm you work for and especially the people you work with. Don’t just settle for chasing a paycheck and most importantly, always find the time for yourself and those you love. Don’t let work consume you 24/7 because life is too precious and too unpredictable.
